The Pros and Cons of Self-Employment

IF YOU’RE thinking of starting a new endeavor, the first thing to do is write out a list of pros and cons. Why do you want to start a home business? What are the pros and what are the cons for you? This will help you record your dreams and fears in black and white so you can deal with them one by one. Before you get out your own paper and pencil, take a look at this list of what other moms have said:

  • The flexibility to attend your child’s games, plays, and school events.
  • The possibility of making more money.
  • More self-confidence.
  • No more dreading asking for time off when your child is sick.
  • The thrill of knowing your service really helped someone.
  • Your kids learn a healthy work ethic from seeing you work.
  • Your kids know what your job is and that they can be a part of it.
  • You aren’t torn apart when you have to drop your child off at day care.
  • Strangers aren’t raising your kids.
  • You gain independence in running your own business.
  • Fewer miles on the cars.
  • Spend less money on clothes, gas, and car maintenance.
  • You can work with your cat on your lap.
  • You can work on your business if you can’t sleep at night.
  • You can take your kids on outings when everyone else is at their 9 to 5 jobs.
  • You can wear whatever you want to work.
  • You don’t have to deal with difficult coworkers or bosses.
  • You can create your own schedule and make your own hours.
  • You can have a baby and not be criticized for it.
  • You can accept only the work you want to.
  • You have the freedom to start a business that you love.
  • You can hold tea parties in the middle of the day with your daughters.
  • “If the kids forget to take something with them to school I can take it to them. I don’t know how we would do this if I was an hour and a half away.” (Marilyn Rowland, indexer)
  • “When I have the flu, I can go upstairs and crawl in bed. I can take my calls up there and nobody has any idea that I’m in bed.” (Suzette Trimmer, owner of a nanny-finding service)
  • “I’m not totally exhausted like I was when I was commuting three hours a day.” (Marilyn Rowland)
  • “I can fit my work schedule into my family’s instead of vice versa.” (Melody Upham, soapmaker)
  • “I don’t have to answer to anybody. I can put my children first without having someone say, ‘What do you mean you won’t be here on time?’ ” (Rebecca Bostick, architect)
  • • “I am able to be more involved with my children’s education.” (Karen Potter, child-care provider)
  • It’s all on your shoulders.
  • There’s no one to run to if your computer breaks down. You are the one who has to fix it or be able to find someone quickly who can.
  • Payments are sometimes few and far between.
  • You’re never really away from your work. You’re in business 24 hours a day.
  • Because you work for yourself, some people may not see your business as a real job.
  • The isolation.
  • Paid vacations are a thing of the past.
  • You can have sick days, but you aren’t going to get paid for them. If anything, you will be losing money.
  • You have to pay for health insurance and figure out your retirement savings yourself.
  • “There’s nobody to pass the buck to. No one taking care of taxes and pensions. Usually the corporate world does that for you.” (Suzette Trimmer)
